+50% cost savings using Core
VBK Publishers was looking for a solution to reduce typesetting costs without compromising the quality of their books. That sounds like Core to us. So, in 2018, we implemented Core into their processes. The result was impressive: our expectations of saving over 50% on our typesetting costs were more than met!
Core is two for the price of one
VKB Uitgevers is very consciously working with new technologies, aiming to work more efficiently and achieve savings. By leveraging their group volume, they were able to achieve significant savings.
Core combines the best of both worlds:
- Part of the process is automated, ensuring your books are finished faster and more cost-effectively.
- But that's not all. The ePub is available almost simultaneously, and because everything is in the cloud, VBK Uitgevers always has access to all files—PDFs, ePubs, and even open files.
A plus with Core? Because the book is always checked by a designer from Crius Group, everything is graphically perfect. Fantastic!
Standardisation, but within certain limits
Core uses patterns, resulting in standardisation. It’s as easy as that. Aspects such as formats and fonts are laid down in special templates.
“We opt for clear, recognisable products, but when the templates were developed we made sure that there is enough leeway to meet the wishes of the editor, the publisher and the author”, explains Marte Kersten, VBK Head of Purchasing and Manager Realization Luitingh-Sijthoff.

The result of Core at VBK Uitgevers
Core was rolled out at most of the VBK publishers and it works really well. The costs are lower and the quality of the books is excellent. In addition, it is worth pointing out that they make far fewer prints at VBK Uitgevers because the proofs are digitalised. So it’s great for the ecological footprint, too!
Small changes, big gains
Using Core certainly calles for adjustments by the staff.
"For starters, manuscripts have to be supplied in a coded format. It’s not very complicated, but it has to be done”, Marte says. "In addition, corrections are made directly in the typeset file using InCopy. That was a significant change for the editors and proofreaders who were used to working on paper. Fortunately everyone realised that the adjustments were outweighed by the many advantages that Core has to offer.”
